Weave Your Own Napkin Set  2- Day Workshop

Weekend Workshop (two consecutive days)
1st Day: Saturday 11am - 5pm
2nd Day: Sunday 11am - 3.30pm

In this weekend workshop, we introduce you to the creative process of making a handwoven textile. Over 2 consecutive days, you will make a set of up to four table napkins that you will have designed and woven from start to finish — whether classy and elegant or funky and fresh!

On the 1. day you will sketch out your ideas, pick your color theme and draw out your final design. There will be four prepared looms to choose from, one for each participant, allowing a variety of weaving patterns. After a seasonal lunch together, we will help you get set up at your loom. You’ll begin weaving your first napkin and make some final adjustments in your design.

On the 2. day you will spend the entire day weaving and tune into the beautiful rhythm of the loom. Julia and Miriam will be there to help you perfect your weaving skills. They will also provide you with coffee, tea and snacks during a short break. In the afternoon, you will finish weaving your napkins, take them off the loom and sew up the seams.

Your unique handwoven napkins will make the perfect gift or a special addition for your own dinner party.

This workshop is designed for all levels.

Limited to groups of max. 4 participants.
Class can be held in English and German.

Studio JUMI - a place for the art and love of weaving

Julia and Miriam met at their four-year weaving formation at Werkhof Kukate. With the wish to rejuvenate the art of weaving and preserve the knowledge of the ancient craft they opened up Studio JUMI - a Berlin-based weaving workshop with six different looms, space for creating handwoven textiles and hosting workshops. Embracing the Bauhaus philosophy, the two young artists work at the interface of art and design, connecting functionality & aesthetics, knowledge & sustainability in their handwoven works.

Studio JU is Julia Buntzel.
Julia found her way to weaving through her interest and research in natural dyes during her studies at the Weissensee Academy of Art Berlin, from which she graduated in 2021. Originally coming from a background in woodcarving and sculpture, it became clear during her time at the academy, that weaving was her artistic language. Her work is inspired by the playful dialogue between the aesthetic form and sensuality of color. Her knowledge in the geographic and linguistics background of color reflects itself in her series of tiny hand-woven and natural-dyed pieces.

Studio MI is Miriam Rose Gronwald.
Textiles have always been part of Miriam's life (she started knitting at the age of 6) but it took a couple of detours before she called it her profession. After graduating from the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in 2012, Miriam worked as a professional dancer in various dance companies and later settled in Berlin as a freelance dancer and performance artist. During a 6-month travel through South-East Asia in 2018, she was fascinated by the textiles of the Lao-Tai minorities and decided to do an internship with Prof. Patricia Cheeseman, founder of Studio Naenna in Chiang Mai. It is here, she learnt to weave on a traditional backstrap loom and was eye-opened to the mythological and symbolic significance of the craft. Miriams work narrates itself along the realms of art and craft. Her movement background interweaves itself into her choreographic approach of fabric in space.
