Did you know that you can extract pigments from local plants? Berlin is a green city and its parks have a lot to offer. But how to uncover a plant's dyeing potential?

You will learn which local plants can be used to extract pigments but also how you can utilize your kitchen waste for this purpose.

You will be introduced to the beautiful alchemy of botanical dyeing and will leave with your own botanically dyed samples. You will then be able to continue with your newly acquired knowledge in the comfort of your own kitchen. Charge your old clothes with the healing power of plants and give them a new life.

Was du bekommst

  • Different types of plant pigments and how to use them

  • Recognizing and foraging dye plants in the proximity of your home

  • Preparing different fabrics for the dyeing process

  • How to make plant colours light- and wash fast

  • Using modifying substances to achieve a spectrum of colours

  • All materials will be provided, including fabric samples, dye plants, dye-kits, drinks, some snacks and music.

  • You will perform a series of small dyeing exercises. You will leave the workshop with a dye-kit to experiment with at home.

  • This workshop will be held in English but questions in German can be answered too. If you're a beginner or have only a basic knowledge of the subject, this introductory workshop is for you.

While working as an architect, Ania had been weaving and working with sustainable textiles for years in her spare time. After 5 years in an architectural office in Berlin, she decided to pursue her dreams: she jumped in at the deep end and turned her hobby into a business – Kaliko, a line of textiles for the body and home, was born.

In her beautiful studio in Berlin she makes products for people who care about the environment, social equality, nature lovers and fellow makers. Besides using, working and experimenting with local plant pigments and certified organic fabrics, Ania teaches her knowledge and dyeing techniques in her workshops.

This was a very fun, inspiring and informative class. Ania is a great teacher and I will be checking out some of her other workshops!

Es hat super viel Spaß gemacht, ich habe viel gelernt und es gab viel Zeit um Fragen zu stellen. Auch das Handout das wir bekommen haben war wahnsinnig detailliert und echt toll gemacht. War ein gelungener Einstieg jetzt selbst zuhause weiter zu experimentieren - spannende quellen für mehr Inspiration und know hier haben wir auch mitbekommen und die Stücke, die wir gemacht haben sehen super schön aus! Gelungener Nachmittag! Vielen Dank!!! (*^?^*)

Lots of experiments, it's very interesting to see how colour can change depending on the material, order of dyeing, water ph, etc. Really enjoyed the workshop!
