If you are interested in leatherwork or crafts in general, and you have a pet friend that needs new good looking and long lasting accessories, this workshop is for you!
I will guide you through the process of designing a producing a vegetable tanned leather harness & leash that suits your pet perfectly.
You will build a classic style harness and lead from scratch, with the option to personalise the harness slightly to your taste (I'll decide based on the time we have a design that is possible to achieve or not).
I will guide you through the process from the design to then cut, punch, rivet, sew, and burnish the whole by hand. You get to choose your leather from our varied colour palette, pick your favourites buckles/hardware from our selection (optionally you can bring your own), and you can even monogram it with your pet's initials or name if you wish to.
Please come prepared will all necessary measures, or bring your 4-legged friend along to model for you directly during the process. Let us know beforehand if there's a specific colour, width, or buckle you have in mind. If you have an old one you’d like to reuse, feel free to bring it or I'll be happy to show you where to look for a good quality buckles online before the workshop takes place.
About the materials:
I only work with Italian vegetable tanned leather (real leather, not vegan!) & solid brass, both premium quality materials and the most sustainable options on the market.
What is vegetable tanned leather and why is it sustainable?:
Vegetable tanned leather is made with an ancient tanning technique that uses from vegetable materials such as bark, wood, leaves and fruit, which don’t pollute the environment or sicken those who are exposed to it, as opposed to Chrome-based tanning, which is cheaper and faster to produce, and one of the top 5 of world’s worst toxic pollution problems.
I will also teach you the basics about leather, the different types of tanning, how to tell them apart, and how to take care of your leather goods to make them last longer.
