This workshop is designed for photographers who already feel comfortable using an analogue camera and want to deepen their understanding of black & white film development and darkroom printing.
You can bring either a 35mm film or a 120 medium format roll that you have already exposed. Our darkroom is fully equipped to develop everything from 35mm to large format film.
This is not a beginner photography course.
You should already feel confident using your camera and be at a stage where your negatives are generally well exposed.
If you’re still unsure about the basics of analogue photography, you’re very welcome to first join my 6-hour beginner workshop, The Magic of Analogue Photography, which covers all essential fundamentals.
In this workshop, however, we will focus entirely on the craft of film development and darkroom printing. During the first part of the workshop, we’ll work through the complete film development process: loading film onto reels in total darkness, exploring different developer recipes and techniques, understanding how developers influence the look of an image, and learning the importance of proper washing and perfect drying methods. Once the negatives are ready, we’ll move into the darkroom printing process. You’ll learn the techniques needed to create strong and balanced black & white prints: exposure timing, test strips, contrast control, pre-flashing, dodging and burning, and other essential darkroom practices that help turn a good negative into a beautiful final print. Each participant will create a contact sheet and produce their own enlargements by hand in the darkroom. The workshop is intentionally kept small, with a maximum of three participants, allowing for plenty of individual guidance and hands-on time in the lab.
