Berlin is an incredibly green city and producing dyes from the nature around can be a sustainable creative practice. Japanese paper is particularly suited to natural dyeing as it can behave as a textile due to the long fibres in it’s content, but as a paper, it absorbs colour without the need of additives.
We’re pairing with our friend and local plant expert, Laura Schneider to host a walking and outdoor workshop where we'll each get a handmade "field board" and a selection of Japanese papers (Washi) to test our found flora on as we walk through the neighbourhood.
Laura will talk about the local plants in our everyday environment. She’ll impart her super knowledge on uses and we’ll non-invasively gather those that can be used for dying.
This is a fully outdoors workshop. After our gathering walk, we'll find a shady spot to make our experiments!
Each participant will get a handmade Field Board for holding papers, pencil, and brush at hand to make colour experiments as we go. We'll have little bags available for you to collect extra bits as we walk, but feel free to bring a bag that you are re-using from home. Dyed papers from the workshop can be used for further artwork and crafts, for gift wrapping or cards, collage, to cover small books, or made into decorations. The possibilities are endless!
